The regatta was hosted by the MicMac Rowing Club, who were very welcoming and supportive. Not only did they lend us racing sculls so we could compete, they also held a mini training session for our members in the basics of racing in a regatta, and let us practice in the sculls the day before.

For all of us (except Marjo) it was the first time we'd ever been in a racing scull! Quite different from our touring boats, for sure! Friday was a hair-raising experience as we struggled to manoeuvre the racing doubles around lanes and bouys in the wind. Nathan even tried a racing single for the very first time and experienced re-entering it from the coach boat after being plucked from the lake waters.

The morning of the regatta was beautiful when we first arrived at the lake, but shortly before the start of the first flight of races the fog rolled in, delaying the start. Rowers in the warm-up area had to wait on the water in the fog until visibility improved enough to begin the races.

Mike and Nathan were the first to experience the race, rowing in the first flight in the Novice Men's Double. In the second flight, the Open Mixed Double race had two PEI entries: Cheryl and Stephen, and Hannah and Mike. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who you ask), we were not able to borrow enough double sculls for our Novice Women's teams to compete, but we combined them to row an exhibition row with Daphne, Nancy, Mary Lynne, and Toni in a quad. We all cheered Marjo who rowed in the Senior Women's Single in the third flight!

After practising our sweep oars on the dock the evening before, we were somewhat anxious but excited nonetheless to row the 500m dash in a coxed eight. Nevermind that none of us had ever been in an eight before, or used a sweep oar before; most of us would not be dissuaded from giving it a go. So, with Marjo rigged for sound in the cox seat, and Nathan's size 13s strapped to the boat shoes, we set off to make history once again for Rowing PEI. Getting ourselves to the start of the race was considered our training and warmup all in one. Kudos to Marjo for keeping us in the lane and coxing us all the way to the finish closely behind the other entry.

Lastly, Marjo and Mary Lynne rowed with arms and body only as an adaptive double to participate in the last dash of the day. This was followed by an amazing buffet lunch provided by MicMac Club volunteers, a dip in the lake, and the awards presentations. All-in-all it was an unforgettable experience!!

Special thanks to Marjo who, as summed up best by our Daphne, was invaluable as our “chef de mission” and her support and skill pulled us through in style! Marjo, we can’t thank you enough for your problem solving and general regatta expertise, from start-number-duct-taping to novice-eight-coxing. All you did brings new meaning to the old expression “we would have been lost without you”. There are too few available row times and the weather is not very reliable, so we're opening those up again to accommodate everyone. Please take note of how many L2 rowers have signed up for a row before you sign up for a 4th or 5th seat, etc. SIGNING UP AHEAD OF TIME WILL HELP ENSURE ENOUGH L2 ROWERS TO ACCOMMODATE EVERYONE AS PER SAFETY STANDARDS!

Rowing Schedule July 11 to 17

Use the arrows at the top to select the correct week if it's not already showing. These novices have had their first coached sessions and are now going to fill in LTR seats in the open rows.

We are working on updating the schedule with added row times and safety boat operators so that everyone gets a chance to take advantage of any good weather that comes our way. This updated schedule should be available in the next few days.

We're also working on polishing our communication skills to let people know when rows are cancelled. It is not always possible to post to Facebook or the blog ahead of time, so if you show up at the dock to row and see that the orange flag is up on our docks, that means the row is cancelled. We've had very few row times not cancelled so far, so fingers crossed summer will arrive soon!

Rowing PEI Facebook Group

Join our Rowing PEI Facebook group for regular updates, meeting and event annoucements, photos, and more! https://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_134591423271834&ap=1

Saturday June 4th Work Party, LTR, etc.

SATURDAY JUNE 4th

8:30am-11:30am - Charlottetown Yacht Club - Work Party to clean and rig the boats, carpet the docks, etc. All hands on deck!

11:30am-12:30pm - Lunch (at CYC?)

12:30-2:30pm - Learn to Row for rowers from last year who missed the LTR sessions (dry land session only)

3:00pm - PEI Canoe & Kayak Association Annual General Meeting - Room 212 Sport PEI building, 40 Enman Cres. To accommodate our growing membership we will offer sessions each week at the following times:

Tuesday 7:00-8:30 PM
Thursday 6:00-7:30 AM
Saturday 7:30-9:00 AM
Sunday 7:00-8:30 PM

At these sessions a safety boat driver will be made available to facilitate a safe practice environment and to assist new members with learning to row. There is no obligation to attend any particular session.

For this summer RowingPEI has also abandoned the traditional structured learn to row format of offering a private set number of sessions to each new group of rowers. We have done this in favor of a "punch card" format.

Prospective rowers will join in with the training group at these scheduled times at their leisure, until they develop the competence to take equipment out on their own (typically 4 sessions). Competence will largely be determined on one's ability to move the equipment to and from the docks with care and one's knowledge of the flow pattern.

This new model better fits the variable weather, the availability of coaches, and interests of our current membership. As rowers develop demonstrate competence they can make arrangements to row on their own or with a crew outside of the scheduled training times. Individuals and crews of all sizes are welcome.

We hope to see you on the water!

Please contact Stephen Murray for details.

Master's Camp at Lake Banook

The Nova Scotia Rowing Association and the North Star Rowing Club would like to invite ALL Master Rowers to Lake Banook for the annual Masters Rowing Camp.
